PRESENTS

"SUBURBAN DREAMS, Season One: MONOPOLY",

a solo exhibition of never before exhibited oil paintings by the San Francisco based artist, Hugo Kobayashi.

These paintings depict the hopes and fears of the artist and of middle class Americans.  Kobayashi often worries about the growing disparity in wealth and power between most of us and a tiny minority.  The classic real estate board game, Monopoly, where the winner ends up owning everything, is the perfect metaphor for our current situation.

The meticulously rendered suburban homes and freeway traffic jams symbolize the middle class lifestyle that Kobayashi grew up in.  The narrow canvases create a narrative that focuses in on the juxtaposition between these suburban landscapes and the enlarged Monopoly game pieces above them, symbolizing our desires for a better life and anxiety over losing what we now have.

These paintings are all nightscapes because night is the time of dreams and nightmares.

Even though these paintings have specific meanings for himself, he hopes that viewers will have a wide range of interpretations.
